After climbing the fence, Widey stops for a drink of water.  It appears she’s lost most of the fur off her tail, indicating a hard time finding food and more fights with other raccoons.

Hal’s Microphone https://gskke.com/2022/02/26/hals-microphone/ https://gskke.com/2022/02/26/hals-microphone/#respond Sun, 27 Feb 2022 01:00:06 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=382 Continue reading Hal’s Microphone]]> Hal, the Wyze Pan Cam covering the stairs in the garage, has a speaker so you can remotely talk to someone at the other end.  Except I don’t know if it actually works that well.  The sound may be garbled.

While exercising on my stationary bike, I remembered I hadn’t brought in the cat food, so I brought up the live video from Hal and discovered Target munching away.  I used the microphone feature to talk with him.  Although curious, he continued eating.

After ten minutes, I gave up and opened the garage door.  Target promptly ran off and I brought in the plastic dish he had been eating out of.

Half an hour later, Target was back.

Wasting no time, he tried to steal the empty metal dish, which was empty.

Widey came by 20 minutes later, but ran off as soon as I started talking over the microphone.

Entering, but Not Exiting https://gskke.com/2022/02/23/entering-but-not-exiting/ https://gskke.com/2022/02/23/entering-but-not-exiting/#respond Thu, 24 Feb 2022 01:00:00 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=360 Widey enters the den three times in 17 minutes, but the camera doesn’t capture her leaving. Either she exits so slowly the camera doesn’t register it, or there is a second exit.

Widey Determined in the Garage https://gskke.com/2022/02/22/widey-determined-in-the-garage/ https://gskke.com/2022/02/22/widey-determined-in-the-garage/#respond Wed, 23 Feb 2022 01:00:41 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=355 Continue reading Widey Determined in the Garage]]> Widey goes up the garage steps and starts eating out of the cat dish.  Pippen is sitting in the cat bed, but doesn’t seem to object.

A couple minutes later, Widey returns down the stairs.  She stops at the side of the car and stands on her hind legs for a moment.

Widey walks toward the cat door, then startles as Target shows up.  Widey runs around the car, while Target heads straight for the stairs.

Target runs up the stairs, while Widey stands on her hind legs to get a better view.  As soon as Target starts to leave, Widey runs off.

Widey avoids Target and comes up the stairs, but quickly leaves again.  (Pippen’s presence is likely an issue.)

Widey circles the car, then climbs the other side of the railing.  Unfortunately, the camera doesn’t pan over.

Widey seems to consider climbing the car, then goes part way up the stairs and climbs the rail instead.  After standing a moment on top of the rail, she climbs back down and goes up the rest of the stairs.  Pippen rises from her bed, steps towards the raccoon, and raises a paw as if to strick.  Widey flees down the stairs.

Widey tries to climbs nearly onto the hood of the car, then jumps down.

Widey considers climbing on one of the bicycles, but decides against it.

Widey tries again to climb the car, but falls.  After looking around a moment, she gives up on reaching the cat dish while avoiding the cat, and leaves the garage.

Waiting at the Tire Tunnel https://gskke.com/2022/02/21/waiting-at-the-tire-tunnel/ https://gskke.com/2022/02/21/waiting-at-the-tire-tunnel/#respond Tue, 22 Feb 2022 01:00:15 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=339 Continue reading Waiting at the Tire Tunnel]]> Target and Widey leave the den.

Target enters the tire tunnel as daylight fades to black (and white.)

Widey joins Target in the tunnel.

Target takes a position at the tunnel opening

After waiting about five minutes, Target leads way toward the side of the shed, and Widey follows.

Eight minutes later, the raccoons return (Widey with a leaf in its tail) and they groom on top of the tires.

After a couple minutes, Widey descends and stands alert on the ground.

Three minutes later, Target steals the cat dishes in the garage.

After being outside for a little more than a minute, Widey considers going back inside, then wanders over and disappears under the other shed.

A couple minutes later, Widey returns to the den.

Target Waiting in Tires https://gskke.com/2022/01/29/target-waiting-in-tires/ https://gskke.com/2022/01/29/target-waiting-in-tires/#respond Sun, 30 Jan 2022 01:00:11 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=251 Continue reading Target Waiting in Tires]]> Widey tried to steal food from Target in the garage, then both raccoons returned to the den.  Five minutes later, Widey somehow sneaked out of the den and is back in the garage looking for leftovers.

Meanwhile, Target leaves the den.

And goes into a row of tires stacked against the fence.

Target returns the entrance of the tire tunnel . . . and waits.  From this vantage point, Target can watch the windows along the back of our house and for vehicles entering or leaving the garage.  Target is probably waiting for the perfect moment to go check the garage.

Meanwhile, Widey is still in the garage looking for food.

Target watches from the tires while Widey returns to the den.

Target then climbs on top of the tires, perhaps for a better vantage point.

And comes back down again.

Target finally leaves the tires and goes around the side of the shed.

Target enters the garage through the cat door.

And looks for leftovers on the garage stairs, except Widey has probably eaten anything.

Widey vs Target and Pippen https://gskke.com/2022/01/28/widey-vs-target-and-pippen/ https://gskke.com/2022/01/28/widey-vs-target-and-pippen/#respond Sat, 29 Jan 2022 01:00:27 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=237 Continue reading Widey vs Target and Pippen]]> I often see racoons traveling in pairs, but that doesn’t mean they’re working cooperatively.  Sometimes one raccoon follows another in hopes of getting some of the leftovers.

Widey carefully comes up the garage steps, where Pippen, a 15-pound stray cat who adopted us, is eating a handful of cat food in a metal dish.  Pippen objects to the raccoon’s presence, so Widey hastily retreats.

Widey pauses before exiting the garage, then decides instead to lurk in the shadows.

Widey ventures back up the stairs.  Pippen has finished eating, but is nearby, so Widey retreats again.  Moments later, Target rushes to the top of the stairs and starts eating cat food.  While Target is hogging the food, Widey sneaks up and tries to check an empty dish on the stairs.  Target responds by trying to steal the dish, but instead knocks everything over.  Hearing a loud noise, I come in and remove the dishes.  (Sadly, there’s no sound.  The dishes hit the railing, which was very loud.)

Target returns less than a minute later and starts cleaning up the bit of cat food spilled on the stairs.  Widey looks for any food that spilled onto the garage floor, then climbs through the railing as Target leaves and looks for leftovers on the stairs.

Target returns the neighbor’s shed.

Followed shortly by Widey.

Both racoons return to the den as if they weren’t just fighting over food.

(To Be Continued . . .)

Widey and Lasagna https://gskke.com/2022/01/23/widey-and-lasagna/ https://gskke.com/2022/01/23/widey-and-lasagna/#respond Sun, 23 Jan 2022 19:47:55 +0000 https://gskke.com/?p=212 Continue reading Widey and Lasagna]]> We had a frozen lasagna from Costco for dinner.  Since the pan it came is is too wide for the cat door in the garage, I decided to see what the raccoons would do with it.

After spying the lasagna pan, Widey checks the surroundings outside three times before venturing into the garage.

Unfortunately we don’t have sound, but we can assume the initial failure to get the pan through the small door was fairly loud.  Widey returns several times over the next 20 minutes to lick the pan clean while only coming partway through the door.

Rosie, our cat, even gives the lasagna a try, but it doesn’t seem to be to her liking.

With the pan finally moved away from the door, Widey re-enters the garage and tries to away from the opening.  The nearby car, however, doesn’t co-operate.

Widey finally decides on a brute force attack.

Never underestimate a determined raccoon!

Five minutes later, Widey was behind the neighbor’s shed, without the lasagna pan.
